“Nothing matters to me now except getting to tomorrow, some way some how.”

Modern AU for
Riku of Kingdom Hearts

Introduction

"Hey. Name's Riku. Don't bother asking about my real name, for I was pretty much disowned the moment I dropped my last year of high school and left home to be a musician. But that was a few years ago, when things were good and getting on the top-charts was first on my mind. But things went to shit faster than I could try and stop it. In the end, the band lost the deal, money, and pretty much ditched me, leaving me out cold on my ass. In short, I went from being the lead guitarist in a rising small-time garage band to the lowest of the homeless in the city streets. If it wasn't for a banged-up acoustic I found while wandering around, I'd be starving or dead in an alley somewhere.Nowadays I'm playing on the streets or in the subway. I earn enough to eat and to afford a few small things. The only thing I got on me are the clothes on my back, my guitar, and the stuff in my pack.Otherwise, that's my life in a nutshell. I don't really have anywhere to go. The only place I do want to return to is playing back on the stages again. Maybe bigger."

Habits

Address Book ║:

Having no cell phone or other digital device majority of the time, Riku has to revert to using an old address book to keep track of the people he meets. Got names, numbers, addresses, and any other little notes he scribbles in to help him remember that person. Rarely uses payphones or asks to borrow cells, but at least the option is there.

Performing Playlist ║:

The songs he would usually choose to play on his acoustic would be a few of the current songs on the radio (if he's lucky enough to overhear it repeatedly), 90s alternative, along with a few favorites from different genres. Usually he would stick to whichever songs were easiest to play and guitar themed anyways.

Interaction ║:

While playing on the streets, he tries to keep a somewhat friendly attitude in order to gain the attention and liking of the surrounding people in order to earn more money. When he's not playing, he's sharper, blunt, and much less trusting of others, and would prefer to keep to himself in order to stay out of any conflicts. Your best bet for a conversation would be while he's playing. He wouldn't want anything to do with people otherwise.

Belongings ║:

He is extremely protective and somewhat territorial when it comes to his belongings. Both his guitar and backpack are equally important to him and he wouldn't be able to function without one or the other. They are his tools for surviving on the streets.

Backpack Contents ║:

  • Extra set of clothes

  • Two water bottles, one is usually filled while the other is empty at most times.

  • Toothbrush

  • Personal belongings:

  • 5 CDs in case: 2 Mixed, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Foo Fighter albums.

  • Button pins: Yin-Yang symbol and a Checkered Star.

  • One braided hemp bracelet with alternating blue and yellow beads.

  • Wallet:

  • High school and state issued ID cards

  • Partially torn photo of his younger self with his parents

  • Concert ticket stubs to Stone Temple Pilots and Live.

  • Dropped mini Moleskin sketchbook he found, various notes and sketches inside from an unknown artist/owner.

Sweets ║:

Generally doesn't like sweet things only because his mouth is used to bland foods. But his favorite treat is the Twinkie, as well as Nutella to a somewhat lesser extent. A little girl he used to know always made him an extra sandwich to give to him when she went on her way to school; banana and either Nutella or peanutbutter.

Sleep - Part One ║:

A light sleeper, due to multiple encounters with theft. He was jumped in his sleep for his belongings, some fights earning him the scars he wears today. Extremely jumpy and prone to lash out if disturbed.

Sleep - Part Two ║:

On the streets you can find him sleeping on either the ground or on benches. Because of this, he's gotten used to hard surfaces, so don't be surprised if you find he's moved from the couch or a bed to the floor in the middle of the night.

Sleep - Part Three ║:

Has a marauder habit of sleeping, meaning he will choose to have his back to a wall and facing the door or entryway before settling down to sleep. Riku will ask the placement of your furniture because of this. Hopefully your couch is against a wall and facing a door.

Hygiene ║:

He knows he's no bed of roses when he walks around, but whenever he can he tries to have some form of upkeep to keep his appearance somewhat presentable if not approachable. He wouldn't want to send his listeners away with a bad whiff of him. Attempts to make trips to public restrooms in the middle of the night. If he's careful, he'd attempt to slip inside school gym showers as well.If allowed in a shower in someone's home, he'd definitely make it count. Expect the hot water to be gone.

Hair ║:

Stopped cutting his hair after leaving home. He's used to getting stares because of it's color, and tends to keep his hood up when he's not performing.

Scars ║:

The biggest and most prominent scar are the ones on his right arm. These were knife wounds from one of the times he was mugged on the streets. It spans diagonally from his elbow to meet the top of his wrist. Another scar is slashed across the top of his hand. These are not noticed immediately, for they're usually hidden by his long sleeves.

Tattoos ║:

Three tattoos: one on the inside of his left wrist along the forearm, another at the top of his left pectoral, and one at the top of his right shoulderblade.

Piercings ║:

Doesn't wear earrings anymore, but still has the holes from them. Used to have a set of two piercings along the shell of both ears, his right ear having slightly larger holes at the top from an industrial earring.

Animals - Part One ║:

He's pretty okay and friendly with most animals when he's not the owner nor the one taking care of them. On the streets he doesn't react much to strays for he doesn't want them to get the wrong idea. If he can barely feed himself, then how can he expect to take care of a pet?

Animals - Part Two ║:

However, the one animal he will stay clear of are large dogs, if not become visibly uncomfortable around them. A bad run in with a loose cage-fighting mutt left a nice bite on his left forearm and calf trying to fight it off. His blood will run cold when it comes to dogs that come above his knee, and will definitely mind the "Beware of Dog" signs whenever he comes across them.

Food - "The Everything Sandwich" ║:

If he gets liberty in a kitchen, he might make one of these. Basically grabs an array of condiments, meats, spreads, lettuce, and chips, and will put all of those things together between two slices of bread.

TV - Cartoons ║:

Has a fair knowledge of cartoons, having been forced to watch them with the kids that he used to babysit back in the day. In the past, older friends would pay him to look after their younger siblings, since he was pretty good with taking care of them and entertaining them. He also didn't mind too much, for he was an only child growing up. It's because of those many hours that he is in touch with various Disney movies and cartoons. Because of one little girl in particular, he knows the plot of the many seasons of "The Winx Club."

Etiquette ║:

When he was younger, his parents had sent him to a finishing school in addition to his private institution in his middle school years. Some of the things he does remember, such as how to eat properly with silverware, manners, and even a few forms of ballroom dancing. He would reveal none of this unless he is extremely comfortable with that person.

Childhood

Riku was born into a high class family under the name Richard Michael Summers. Though he was named after his father, his mother Claire addressed him as Riku growing up. He does not know why this is, other than being a nickname for him, but does not think too much of it besides having an uncle going by the same title and having similar looks. Most of his childhood was spent with his mother and his uncle Ri, for his father was a traveling entrepreneur. During the times where both his mother and father would be away traveling for business in addition to summer vacations, young Riku would spend his days with his uncle. He loved visiting Uncle Ri, for Ri always listened to little Riku play all the songs his mother taught him on his little Casio piano, helped him with his homework as well as tutored him, for Ri aspired to become a teacher, and also spent days out in the sun at the beach, just a short walk away from his uncle's home.

It didn't last though, for at the age of nine, Riku's father, Richard, had chosen to move from their current home closer to his place of work, leaving those pleasant summer days behind. Riku was unable to protest, nor did he have the time to as his father had immediately transferred him from the small public school to a private academy. It was there he was forced to earn a top education; wearing school uniforms, taking various etiquette classes, as well as attending many business functions with his father. The only saving grace to his father's molding was his music. Riku continued to learn and play piano with his mother, and enjoyed performing both for the audience of various functions as well as his friends and instructors. His father let Riku have his hobby, for he saw the talent useful when it came to impressing clients and higher-ups at functions. Riku mostly played classical compositions at these social gatherings, but at home his mother had also taught and exposed him to the fun and rhythm of jazz music, quickly becoming a fan of the genre and singing along with his mother to various songs.

At eleven years old before the start of his middle school years, Riku picked up the trumpet as his next instrument in order to play songs from his mother's favorite records. His father didn't much appreciate the louder genre of music, so most of his time practicing was when his father was out of the house or at the academy's music room. He had mastered the instrument by age thirteen, before switching to his next instrument before beginning high school. Before his family moved once again, Riku had begged his father to allow him to attend a public high school, wanting to make more friends instead of "business partners" with the offspring of his father's clients and following. His father reluctantly agreed, creating a deal where Riku would have to keep up with his studies as well as continuing to attend important functions and meetings. The summer before he turned fourteen, Riku took up learning how to play guitar, hoping to fit in to what he thought was "normal society" and gain popularity with peers. He got what he wanted, soon earning a name for himself at the school and gaining many friends. However, things began to change, for the more he sought for freedom and fun, the more his father began to pull him back.

Family

Father: Richard Summers

An accomplished entrepreneur of Summers Enterprises, traveling often and engaging in various business deals in order to further expand his company. He hopes to leave a legacy behind for his son Riku to run, sending him to the best schools and exposing him to his business endeavors so that one day Riku would inherit the company and continue his work. His plan had somewhat backfired, finding that allowing his son too much exposure to his musical interests was misdirecting his goals. He was furious that all his efforts had gone to waste when Riku had decided to run away, choosing to chase a pipe dream instead of accepting all the things that his father worked so hard to prepare for him.

Mother: Claire Summers

Riku's loving mother, an accomplished pianist and singer who enjoys teaching her son and encouraging him to persue his musical endeavors. She had grown much quieter and softer after marriage, but it does not stop her from singing her favorite songs from back in the day. She often helped Riku escape some of his responsibilities, but worked to raise him against the stereotypical high-class norms. She wished for him to achieve his dreams, but did not expect her son to run away so suddenly. She prays every day for his safety, hoping that he finds what he's looking for and comes back home.Unknown to Riku, it is his uncle that is his true biological father. Her step-brother Riku, otherwise addressed Ri, was adopted into her family by her parents when he was thirteen years old, her being seventeen at the time. It was at a rowdy party that declared this, a nineteen year old Claire having unknowingly seduced fifteen year old Ri while the both of them were heavily intoxicated. Confused and embarrassed the morning after, they both agreed never to speak of the taboo, even though they weren't blood related. However, it was soon after that Claire discovered that she was not only withchild, but was placed into an arranged marriage by her parents in order to solidify a partnership between her father and the Summers company. She agreed to marry, hoping to pass off the child as Richard's, her husband-to-be. Luckily the marriage was conducted quickly, along with the consummation following soon after to cover up the previous engagement. It was when Riku was four years old that he was introduced to his "uncle", Claire then telling Ri that Riku was his son after declaring that he was named after his "true father." It surprised her when Ri took the news better than most would expect, at first excited to have a nephew, albeit surprised when the label changed, but acted no different as he spent time with the child. Ri wished to be there to watch his son grow and help raise him, agreeing with Claire to keep the secret from her husband. To this day, Riku still does not know these details of his birth.

Uncle Ri

The adopted brother to Claire, and biological father to Riku. He had chosen to take up the guise as Riku's uncle in order to keep the night between him and his step-sister Claire a secret. He absolutely adores Riku, enjoying all the time he spent with his "nephew" when he was a child. Ri performed all of his fatherly duties, doing much more to love and raise Riku than his other father. It shattered him to discover that both Riku and Claire were moving away from him to another city, but protesting would raise suspicion and risk their cover. He reluctantly let them go, calling Claire every now and again to hear news on Riku.Ri had since moved from his beach home to an apartment in the city not long after earning his degree in English, becoming a professor at a highly esteemed and prestigious university. Hearing of Riku's sudden disappearance came as a shock to him, and could only hope for the best that his son was safe out there in the world.

Music Academy

Not long after living on the streets, Riku was found by a long lost relative, his Uncle Ri. Now he's living with him, working to regain the childhood bonds he had lost, as well as returning back to school.Unknowingly having traveled to his uncle's city of residence, Riku was found by the distant family member by chance. The reunion was of both shock and surprise, for Uncle Ri had not seen his nephew since he was a small boy, and was only recently told that the teen had run away from home those many months ago. Upset that he was living in such poor conditions, Ri had taken him home to his apartment. Riku begged his uncle not to call his parents, not until after he finished what he set out to do. Ri soon gave in, failing to see past the five year old he used to care for all those years ago. He established a deal where Riku would finish his education at the Academy of Arts, where Ri was the teacher of the English and literature courses. Riku reluctanctly agreed, not looking forward to returning to the atmosphere of general education and an awkward family life. However, gaining a degree in Music Performance for guitar would be a plus.

Moanin' Jazz Club

At the age of 26, Riku had become the proud owner of the Moanin' Jazz Club, a high-class establishment of entertainment for folk who still enjoyed the old swinging times. It was fate that the owner had found the teen on the streets, instantly recognizing his musical talents and hiring him to join the club's small band. Riku enjoyed performing back on stage again as well as returning to his previous instruments, the piano and trumpet. As the years went by, the club had become his new home, as well as the staff and band becoming his new family. Having looked upon Riku as a son for that short time, the owner imparted Moanin' and the rest of his inheritance to the teen before passing away, wishing for the club's legacy of entertainment to continue. To this day, Riku continues to run the club, performing and entertaining any free chance he gets.
